While completing school, a person would often find me putting in many hours at Five Star Service Center. We provided charge accounts for many of the trusty locals. This included a certain shy guy, owner of Davis Automotive. At least, that is all I knew of him. His signature was too sloppy for me to ever be able to read his name. It was April 5, 2003 and KU was having a fabulous NCAA tournament. They were scheduled to play Marquette in the final four later in the evening. As I was working that day, the Davis Automotive guy kept coming in. He must have come by at least seven times. Each time for something different . . . gas, candy bars, soda . . . The last time he came in that day, I finally asked him if he had everything he needed this time. He must have finally found the courage to talk to me, because it was then that he asked me if I would be interested in joining him down at a local pub to watch the final four games with him and some of his friends!! I thought I was going to fall over. I hadn't lived in Hays too terribly long and I did not know too many people yet. So I thought . . . I like KU . . . and I like going to pubs. What a genius idea!! So, with KU's massacre over Marquette and Syracuse's slide past Texas, they were now going head to head in the Finals. The loyal worker I was, I was unable to get off work that night to watch it. Now knowing the Davis Automotive guy's name, Robbie knew how sad I was, and he insisted on bringing a TV to my work so that I would be able to watch KU play in the championship. Needless to say, KU had a disappointing loss that night and Carmelo Anthony later got the #3 draft pick, but I found my best friend and love of my life.
